Hi I have a hikvision ds2cd2386g2 iu (c) in the daytime the picture looks washed out and at night very blocky. Any help

Hi @laustin956

Can you please share screenshots from the camera of the image you are seeing during the day & night?

Thanks @laustin956

Can you please share the video stream settings and the image settings for the camera?

In regards to the day image, I would check if you have any Backlight Settings enabled (HLC, BLC, WDR) and if you do I would try disabling them and enabling different Backlight settings.

Also, I would try different White Balance settings as using the wrong white balance can cause the colours in the day image to look off.

The washed out look is usually a sign of WDR being set too high. For the nighttime blockiness I'd be interested to know what settings are on the main stream. A bit rate set too low to match the other settings would be my guess.

Wdr auto 30 had it on and 30 and off still no change. I will put setting up later

I've found that it seems to ignore the set level with Auto. If you set it to Auto, it seems to crank up the WDR regardless of what value is set or whether it is needed. If you don't need WDR switch it off and just drop the contrast by about 5 to lighten the shadows. If you think you do need WDR try it on Manual at 5 rather than Auto.

Settings I'm using now

OK so as I said either turn off WDR or set it to manual and 5. Drop the contrast to 45 - that will lighten the image a bit in a pseudo WDR fashion, evening out the exposure a bit. That will sort the washed out daytime picture. White balance can normally be left on AWB. It's fine to use other settings for that but depending on the time of day and weather the light may not always be 'natural' so you may get some strange colour rendition at times as the light changes. AWB is more predictable.

Night time blockiness. You've reduced the the noise reduction from its default of 50 to 15. That's a problem because the noise is increased in low light and the camera is encoding that noise pushing up the required bit rate. At some point the camera is going to struggle to encode 25FPS of video within the bit rate limits set, so will increase compression/drop the quality rather than drop frames. Pop it back to 50.

Turn off H265+ - it can give a poor image and may be contributing to the blockiness. For reference my 4K cameras are set to H265, Highest quality, 25FPS and 12,288 bit rate.

It may be fine but I'm not a fan of it myself. I occasionally would see ghost/repeat images and people appearing to have 2 heads (though the latter is not uncommon in Middlesbrough!)

Just changed all setting night very blocky dropped video resolution to 1280*720 so much better

Rarely have i needed to make dramatic adjustments from default settings. if you can default the Video Parameters & Display Settings & try the settings in pics ................... Exposure is the only setting from Default changed

<<EDIT: Set Exposure Time to 1/25>>
