I would go with the eDVR if upgrading. These work like charm if you ask me.

Is this software for free or do you have to pay for SmartVision?

If I am not mistaken the black lines show there is no recording for that time. Do you have your NVR/Camera's on full time recording? Do you have network/power problems that might stop the system from operating thus not record.

Have you tried IVMS-4200? That works best for me. I have over 500 camera's connected to my IVMS-4200 using an older version. The new version has a limit on the number of camera's you can add.
