Hello, a friend of mine has a DS-7608NI-I2/8P and it has not been updated since he got it in 2018. I've heard that jumping too many firmware versions at once can cause issues. Does anyone know the best way of updating this or do we need to update to each firmware version released in turn? Also the cameras will be out of date too, are they also problematic if the firmware jumps from old to latest?

Hello, a friend of mine has a DS-7608NI-I2/8P and it has not been updated since he got it in 2018.
The firstling to check is that it is not one of the affected models that brick beyond a certain firmware version. This has been identified to be a particular batch of that model identifiable by the serial number.

If it is one of the affected versions, you will still be able to update it up to but not beyond the version that will brick it into a reboot loop!

Regardless, the preferred way to update is not to jump straight to the newest and not to load every one either. The firmware version is formatted a.bb.ccc (for instance 3.4.102). Look through the list and include the first of each change of 'bb', before finally adding the latest version (that should make more sense if you look at a list of versions for a model on the portal)

Edit:

The versions affected by the hardware issue were manufactured in 2015 and have a 9 digit serial number 589xxxxxx. If your friends NVR serial begins 589 do not update beyond 4.61.000. More information is available in this thread:

Thank you for this information that's really handy to know. My mate has an DS-7608NI-I2/8P/CVBS and his serial starts 1434. Is it safe to update to current version V4.61.030 Build240123?

Just to clarify, the serial number is the 9 characters before the letters at the end of the string if you look in the maintenance page.

It should be fine subject to going through several versions before the final version (as mentioned in my last post) If it’s an old V3 version it’s important to clear browser history when transitioning from V3 to V4. Let me know what the current version is and I can advise which interim updates to update through.

All I have is a photo which I've been sent of the sticker underneath which shows the model and serial number. Is this not the same serial?

Yeah it should be. It's just that when you view it on the maintenance page when logged in via a web browser that number is contained in a longer string of characters. Until you can confirm the current firmware version from the local menu or when logged in using a web browser, theres no way to determine what versions you need to update through.

There's a lot to update through on the NVR as it's back on V3. The arrows in the image point to the updates to go through. Be sure to delete the browser history after the first update (or at any time the page fails to load or display correctly after reboot):

The portal page containing the necessary updates is here:

UK Portal - I Series

Do the NVR first; the cameras can be done afterward.

You'll probably be fine updating the G1 cameras directly to the latest version but if you want to be sure do the following 2:

The G1 firmware can be found here:
