No cameras after NVR reset

Hello

After adding 2 new cameras to my setup, I thought I'd do a little tidying up. I have 6 Hikvision cameras connected to an 8 port Hikvision NVR. It was a bit of a concern to me that I was unsure about the passwords I had used when I first set the NVR up about 5 years ago (careless I know). I thought a factory reset of the NVR would allow me to set it all up again and this time properly record the passwords. I restored the NVR to its factory defaults. I then reconnected all the cameras and thought they would just show up on the monitor in plug and play style as they did when I first set the system up, but none of the cameras are displaying. Any advice please?

You might need a Delorean unless you can remember the passwords for the cameras.

If you know the password that the camera used (quite likely the same as the NVR password was), just change the NVR admin password to match along with the channel default password, then reboot the NVR. After a short time the NVR will reconnect the cameras to the NVR channels via plug and play.

If you don't know the camera passwords you're going to have to reset them by powering up with the reset button pressed and held for a number of seconds. If you can't access them you'll need to use SADP and the 'forgot password' option for each camera, exporting each of the files and sending to Hikvision before importing the corresponding file from Hikvision back to the camera.

I sold my Delorean to a chap with wild hair - actually looked like the hair I had left until a few years back. Thanks for the further guidance. My problem with SADP is that it doesn't like Apple Mac much, but I will see what I can do tomorrow. My wife has suggested I use variations of Wally for all my passwords but I think that is slightly unfair.

So your secure password is probably 'W411y123'!

As said, the password for the cameras is likely your previous NVR admin password. If you just make sure you use that again on your NVR (assuming you know it) the cameras will reconnect. If not you could try password guessing on a camera....

  • Disconnect a camera from the NVR (you needn't do that if you have a spare camera port)
  • Connect a laptop/Macbook to the spare camera port and manually set it's IP address to 192.168.254.100
  • Run an IP scanner - I use 'IP Scanner Ultra' on my Mac. You'll see the cameras connected to the NVR on 192.168.254.xxx addresses. Right them down.
  • Open a web browser and type in one of the addresses to bring up the cameras login page. Username 'admin' and try and guess the password. You'll get temporarily locked out after x attempts. When that happens, just continue using another of the cameras IP addresses and so on.
You might get lucky and remember what you used. If so try it on each camera to make sure they're all the same (highly likely). Then unplug the cameras from the NVR, set the NVR password and channel default password to the one you've found and then reconnect the cameras. After a short time they'll reconnect. Once they have you can change the NVR password and default channel password to whatever you want and you'll get a prompt to sync teh password to the connected cameras which you should accept.

Good luck!

I managed to recall the password and the cameras are now all reconnected. It is a weakish password. Not a real concern, but is there a way of changing it without losing and having to reset the cameras?

Apologies I sent my last query before fully reading the above. I see you have covered my question. Thanks.
