I’m planning to purchase a Hikvision DS-7732NXI-I4/16P/VPRO and deciding between hard drives. Historically I’ve used WD Purple, but they’re pricier, so I’m considering Seagate SkyHawk AI ST16000VE002 (16TB) as a alternative.

A few things I’d like to know from people who’ve used these drives in NVRs:

  • Are the SkyHawk AI drives reliable for sustained multi-channel recording with analytics/AI enabled?
  • Any issues with vibration, compatibility, or firmware when used in a 32-channel environment?
  • Do the WD Purple Pro drives noticeably outperform SkyHawk AI in real-world reliability or longevity — enough to justify the price premium?
Thanks — all opinions and real-world experiences welcome.

Usually both Seagate and WD are used in CCTV, Its real shame that series 7 does not support RAID and hot spare in case of failure. But regardless of that i find WD to be really good drives. There were few series with bad batch, but that was quite some time ago.

Cant really judge Seagate as i do not work with it. But overall i can say i am satisfied with WD.

Out of 100% sold pieces, return rate is aprox 3% within first 2 years.

I’ve also had good experiences with WD Purple drives, but it’s going to cost me about £175 more to go with WD instead of Seagate, which is why I started looking at the Seagate option. The only difference I can see is that the Seagate drives have a 256 MB cache, whereas the WD models have 512 MB. I’m not sure how much that would actually affect performance.
