Hik Connect - what connects?

I've posted another specific query about one of my NVR poe connected cameras showing as "offline" on Hik Connect but showing ok on the NVR's monitor without obvious cause. More generally, can anyone advise on this - with cameras connected to an NVR does Hik -Connect connect via the NVR only or is there any form of connection with the individual cameras?

When the cameras are connected to the POE ports of the NVR, just the NVR is connected to the Hik-Conect platform. Even if Hik-Connect was setup directly on the individual cameras it would have no effect (the cameras have no path to the internet as the NVR keeps them on a different network segment). If a camera is connected to the local network (rather than directly to the NVR)...

When the cameras are connected to the POE ports of the NVR, just the NVR is connected to the Hik-Conect platform. Even if Hik-Connect was setup directly on the individual cameras it would have no effect (the cameras have no path to the internet as the NVR keeps them on a different network segment). If a camera is connected to the local network (rather than directly to the NVR) and is added to an NVR on the same network you would still use Hik-Connect to the NVR. However in that scenario it is also possible to add the cameras to Hik-Connect, as they can communicate with the platform (so long as a default gateway and valid DNS address are set). Where there is an NVR on site I'd always advise adding just the NVR to the Hik-Connect platform, regardless of how they're connected as you could get issues withe push notifications where both the camera itself and the NVR channel are set to 'notify surveillance center'

As for your initial issue, normally the most you'd need to do would be:
  • log out of the Hik-Connect app (don't just close it)
  • reboot the NVR
  • open the Hik-Connect app and log back in

Thanks again JB1970. I did as you suggested and it worked the second time (I may have bungled the first attempt). I had previously closed the app rather than logging out and that was clearly ineffective. Looking back my lack of knowledge made me overcomplicate things when I saw a new camera go offline on a newly installed cable - which is why a forum such as this and contributions from experienced users such as you are much appreciated.

Glad it’s sorted for you. Sometimes simply dragging the home screen to refresh can resolve it. Another step I’ve had to do occasionally is toggling Hik-Connect (off, save, on, save) in the Platform Access/ Hik Connect page of the NVR/DVR.
