Hi,

The specs for the Hikvision DS-7608NI-M2/8P POE NVR says that it records at 8, 12, 24 and 32 MP resolution.

Does this mean that buying a 16MP camera would be pointless as presumably you'd only be able to choose 12MP or does it have a 16MP option that's not shown in the specs ?

Hi @srs0115

We have had confirmation from Hikvision support that the M-series NVRs will support both the new 12MP & 16MP cameras.

The NVR specs/datasheet predate Hikvision's plans to release 16MP cameras.

Thanks Dan,
That's good to know although I'm not sure yet whether to make the jump from 8MP to 12 or to 16.
Currently I have an older 4 channel turbo HD DVR with 3 x 8mp IP cams plus a Reolink doorbell.
I'm wanting a 2.8mm wide angled lens camera for my backyard that's clearer than my current camera.
The camera overlooks the parking area which is about 40m away. It's a little pixelated at that distance and I can't even make out number plates so I was hoping that a 12 or 16mp camera might resolve that. Sometimes we get a few suspicious individuals in that area so more clarity would definitely be an advantage.
I'm about to borrow an Annke 12mp camera in order to test it to see if there's any significant improvement or not which hopefully will help me to decide.
Obviously I won't be able to record any 12mp footage with my current DVR but hopefully I'll be able to digitally zoom in on the live video and notice a difference.

I've just borrowed an Annke C1200 12MP 2.8mm lens camera in order to test it's clarity at various distances.
At first my Turbo DVR wouldn't let me add it until I reduced the C1200's resolution down to 8mp.
Once added I found out later that I was then able to log back into the camera's settings and change back to 12mp and surprisingly the DVR accepted that.
Unfortunately the picture quality of the Annke C1200 at both 8 and 12mp was really poor compared to my Hikvision 8mp cameras.
It could only just capture a car number plate at around 15m so no chance at 30-40m.
I couldn't believe how poor the Annke camera was, bearing in mind they're supposed to be made by Hikvision.
When digitally zoomed in, it looked as though a 5 year old had used a pencil and drawn an outline around everything. I've seen this effect on trail cameras that claim to be 40mp with a 5mp sensor.
I still intend to upgrade but will definitely stick to the Hikvision cameras
