DS-7608NI-I2/8P should I update Firmware?

I have the Hikvision DS-7608NI-I2/8P running 4 cameras, and it works fine. It is still in the same firmware V3.4.89 as installed when supplied by USE-IP back in 2021. Out of curiosity I looked up what the latest version is, and see there have been lots of Firmware updates, the latest being V4.61.030_240123_S3000554085.

Should I update, or leave well alone?? Can I go direct to the latest version, or do I need to perform intermediate update first?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Hi @EtheAv8r

We always recommend keeping the firmware up to date, so we would recommend updating your NVR.

As you say, there have been a lot of firmware versions released since you bought the NVR.

See the full list on the Hikvision Download Portal.

As you are so far behind, we do recommend that you upgrade in steps.

Below (in descending order) are the firmware versions we recommend updating to one at a time:

V3.4.103 build181226
V4.1.10 build171107
V4.1.64 build190119
V4.22.005 build191208
V4.40.015 build200616
V4.50.000 build20210125
V4.51.025 build210927
V4.60.000 build211129
V4.61.000_220507
V4.61.025 build220905

WOW, thank you for such a speedy and detailed reply. It seems I have a fair task on my hands! the NVR Serial # is DS-7608NI-I2/8P0820171220CCRRC02018317WCVU which I believe is not one affected by the constant reboot bricking problem.

Is it OK to leave the cameras as they are or will they need to be updated also? I hope not as I have not been able to discover how I find out what they are in in iVMS-4200 and the SADPtool only enumerates the NVR..... let alone how to update them.

Hi @EtheAv8r

It should be fine, the boot loop issue only impacted a small number of NVRs produced in/around 2015.

Are all your cameras directly connected to the NVR PoE ports?

If they are, they will be using the NVRs own subnet IP range (192.168.254.xxx), which is not visible to iVMS/SADP on your local network.

You should be able to access directly connected cameras using Virtual Host in the NVR menus.

You should be okay to update the NVR without updating the cameras, as the NVR can support older camera models/firmware.

Do you know the model numbers for the cameras you currently have connected to the NVR? (If not, you should be able to confirm the models using Virtual Host)

Yes, all my 4 cameras directly connected to the NVR PoE ports.

I enabled Virtual Host be get (NVR IP Address) Refused to connect

I think the cameras are:
2 x DS-2CD2355FWD-I 5MP 2.8mm
1 x DS-2CD2T55FWD-I5 5MP 4mm
1 x DS-2CD2T55FWD-I8 5MP 4mm

Thank you so very much for your help.

Well the update to V3.4.103 build181226 went well and all was OK.

The update to V4.1.10 build171107 seems to have actually worked OK, and accessing vie iVMS-4200 indicates that is is working as it should.......

HOWEVER..... The screen connected to the NVR is a 1280 x 1024 (I think - it is very old) but it might be 1024 x 768. and the NVR will not display anything on that screen!!! so I cannot go any further. The screen displays a message "Out of Range Signal Cannot Display this Video Mode, Change Computer Display Input to 1600 x 1200 @ 60Hz" And of course because the monitor will not display anything from the NVR, I cannot change the settings locally.

Is there any way to reset the NVR output resolution remotely?

EDIT: OK I stumbled upon the settings for this in the Web Interface on the Configuration>System Settings>Menu Output Page. All is well now, so onwards and Upwards through the rest of the Firmware Updates,

Thanks @EtheAv8r

The Virtual Host feature might not work when you are running the older NVR firmware, as it might not be supported by modern browsers.

I would try accessing Virtual Host again once you've updated the NVR to one of the more recent V4 firmware versions.

OK I have now gone through and applied each of the 10 firmware updated one by one and tested all ok after each.

There was a bit of a hiccup after applying V4.60.000 build211129; the NVR rebooted OK but only 1 camera came up, the other three all said Incorrect Username or Password. Whilst I was having a think, after a couple of minutes, a second camera came up, but not the other two. Then as I was manually entering the user name and password for camera 3, both Camera 3 and 4 came up. So I though I would perform a Cold Boot, rather than a Reboot to see if it was a junk in memory issue like you sometimes get with PCs. Executed a Shut Down and then Powered off, waited a minute, and then powered on again. This time 2 cameras came up, the other two complaining of Incorrect Username or Password. Went to have a cuppa to see if the other two would come up after a while, but when I returned, they had not. So I manually entered the Username and Password for each of those cameras, and they came up.

Wondered if there was a bug in this firmware, should I roll back to V4.51.025 build210927 which had worked fine, or update to the next Firmware V4.61.000_220507 and see what happens, which I did.

V4.61.000_220507 worked fine, so I then completed the final update to V4.61.025 build220905, which went fine and all is working as it should.

I have to say that this is the first time I have asked for help via this forum since I bought the kit in 2021, and the response has been AMAZING, way beyond my expectations! It was fast, with detailed practical advice and the steps to take to get the NVR updated to the latest Firmware. so @Dan, thank you very much.

I can confirm that the Virtual Host enabling direct connection the the cameras is now working. No video working in the Browser connection of course, that has not worked for years, but the Configuration Tab and sub menus work great. So I can confirm that the Camera details are:

Thanks for the update and positive feedback @EtheAv8r

As I expected, the cameras are also running older firmware.

All the models you have use the same firmware platform, and as they are all currently on the same V5.5.3 firmware, you will be okay to update all of them straight to the latest & last V5.5.xxx firmware version - V5.5.82

Thank you very much for your help. Although I was able to update the NVR fully, I have nor been able to update the cameras. I could not find a way using iVMS4200, I tried with the browser on the Web interface and am able to log on to the camera, and in the Maintenance tab there is an update Firmware option, but when I click "Browse" to point to the file location, nothing happens, no file window opens to let me select the Firmware File. I also tried direct on the NVR itself, and was able to select the new firmware file, but it then reported "Firmware Update Failed".

I have tried all sorts of things, but have abandoned as I cannot get it to work. The cameras are working fine though.

Dan. This is very helpful. Thank you.
Is there a process document for me to follow so that I am familiar with 'how to' before I embark.
I am currently at firmware version V3.4.95 Build 170626 on NVR 7732NI-I4/16P

Hi @MKSteve

You can find the instructions for updating firmware HERE

We would recommend that you first update to the last V3 firmware (V3.4.103), and you can then follow the same update order that I laid out in my original response.

The firmware upgrade instructions say:
Step 4: Browse to your NVR, camera, etc - using Internet Explorer:
Can you recommend what I should do about using IE please, do I use IEability extension on Chrome?
Thanks

Hi Dan Is there a post regarding what to do if you update your dec 2015 ds-7608NI-12/8P and end up in a constant boot. As i now appear to own one. Many thanks Matt

Hi @MAT1234

See this post in the original thread discussing the boot loop issue.

Basically, if you have this boot loop issue, you will need to contact the company that originally supplied your NVR to arrange returning the NVR to Hikvision for repair/replacement.
