Hi

I hope someone can advise on the following issue I’m having with the Hikvision cctv system at my daughters house as below which is less than two years old.

DS- 7608NI-M2/8P with 4 x Colorview DS-2CD3347G2-LSU 4MP IP which also records all different events such as person/vehicle etc 24/7
2TB Seagste Skyhawk hdd installed.

The disk status has been showing Exception but if you reboot the system the status goes back to normal and you can also see all the previous playback recordings for the last two weeks. Sometimes if you reboot the NVR then only some days are shown for playback.

I am wandering if this is a hdd failure issue and why it’s happened so soon. I’ve not been over yet to actually do a SMART or full format test before deciding to replace the hdd as not sure if it’s still under warranty.

At my own house I have a 3TB WD Purple installed in my DS-7608NI-I2 3 x Colorview DS-2CD2347G2-LU which I have had running for four years without any issues.

Therefore, can anyone
A) advise why I might be getting the intermittent Exception messages

B) If I do decide to replace the HDD, I will probably get a bigger one but which one would people get these days from their experience - I.e. WD Purple or Seagate SkyHawk for 24/7 usage as both have mixed reviews and the fact that I’ve not had any issues with the WD Purple in my system.

Any other advice/things to check most welcome.

Many thanks in advance.

You mention that sometimes only some days are shown for playback and that would be a symptom of corruption of the recording database.

On the storage page tick the box next to the disk, and rather than format/initialise use the 'Repair Database' option. This will take some time to run, but just leave it do it's thing and it should fix it. While it is running you will see the markers on the recording calendar slowly start to repopulate.

With regard to disk model I generally use Seagate Surveillance as that's what my supplier pre populates NVRs/DVRs with. I've found them to be very reliable so will usually use them when I need to replace one that finally dies (I've had them last 8 years plus running 24/7) It can be a bit of a minefield choosing a new HDD as some are not fully supported by Hikvision. 'Seagate Surveillance'/'Seagate SkyHawk' is just the model range; the specific model code is what needs to match up on Hikvisions HDD compatibility list. I've had 'Seagate SkyHawk' models purchase from Amazon that were partially incompatible on that list (DM SMR models that do not support Dual VCA storage used for Smart search)

Hi JB

Thanks for your reply. When I do the repair database option do I need to leave it running on that screen or can you go back to the live screen whilst it’s running in the background.

Thanks

No you can go back to the live screen and it’ll complete in the background

Hi JB

I’ve just gone and started a DB repair and left it. Will see how it goes and keep you updated.

Thanks

Hi

Just an update…

Did a DB repair which competed.
Ran Sort and Extended SMART tests both give Read Operation Failed
Did a Bad Sector health check - it’s got loads of bad sectors and aborts.

Therefore think I need to replace the hard drive. Need to check if it’s in warranty as installed in September 2023.

I’ve attached some pics.

Am I correct the NVR DS- 7608NI-M2/8P supports two drives? As thinking of buying one anyway and if I can get the faulty one replaced then just have two drives.

Yes the 2 in M2 refers to the numbers of SATA HDD connections so you can pop a second one in.

Thanks. The installer has confirmed the disk is still under the 3 year warranty so will be returning it once my new 4TB Skyhawk arrives then hopefully the faulty one will get replaced aswell and I’ll have two drives total 6TB.

Thanks
