For a year or three(!), the largest capacity HDD that would work in a Hikvision NVR has been 14TB.
(old thread here)

In some new product datasheets we saw mention of 16TB being the largest capacity HDD that they would accept.

We have checked with Hikvision's UK Tech Support and they have confirmed that 16TB HDDs can be used now.

If we get more info on specific compatibility we will add it here as & when.

Meanwhile, HDD manufacturers are closing-in on 30TB drives ...
(obviously, at bleeding-edge prices)

One year on, and this topic is due an update.

Hikvision have just released their new large Super H Series NVRs.
Those NVRs can accept a 20TB HDD (up to 24 in one NVR!).

Only this Seagate Sky Hawk AI 20TB hard drive has been tested and approved by Hikvision (select the 20TB variant from the dropdown on the linked product page).

In establishing that fact, we learned that a few other NVRs are also now able to accept that 20TB HDD.
Please see the table below for further details of which Hikvision NVR range can accept what capacity of Seagate Sky Hawk AI HDD:

Y=Compatible
N=Not compatible

I have also attached the latest available Hikvision HDD compatibility document pdf (87 pages).
Pages 2-6 explain which NVR & DVR models fall within which category used within the document for detailing HDD approval.
If you find your model in the right-side section there, then the category title at the left-side is usually a hyperlink to take you to the document page for your device.
At the head of that page/section device model numbers are confirmed.
Within the section for your device you will find the hard drive models that Hikvision have tested and proven with your device.

WD = Western Digital
ST = Seagate
MG = Toshiba Enterprise [NB the 5yr warranty on this Toshiba range]

Found this post looking for info on the maximum HDD size for my Hiksvision DS-7732NI-I4(B) with Firmware V 4.51.025 build 210927.
Bought december 2019 and initianally the datasheet mentioned 8TB as maximum size.
Been running 2 WD purple 8TB drives (16TB in total) for the last 6 years without any problems.

Been adding some cameras and want to expand the recording capacity.

Only 2 free HDD bays left, so I want to put in the largest compatible size.

Been reading different answers so i'm confused.

- Hikvision HDD-Compatible-List (see above) states max 10TB with firmware V4.40 and above
- Using the diagram above I see max 14TB using WD purple
- Reading the first post maybe even max 16TB is possible

Can you clarify what is the max HDD size to add to my NVR ?

Also curious if adding a different (bigger) size then the two 8TB ones is not causing any potential problems.
Maybe its better to just add another 8 TB ?

Thanks !

Just discovered that the Hikvision UK website states the max HDD size is 16TB if you read the info on this page:

But if you download the datasheet on the same page, is states max 10TB...

How confusing can it be ?

Hi @Adnet

From our experience, 16TB is the largest size that is stable on most Hikvision NVRs (including the I-series model you have).

Some larger sizes may work, but Hikvision hasn't done much testing with 18TB or larger HDDs, and the feedback we've had from people who have tried them is that it's a bit hit and miss if they work or not.
