Environmental noise filter, on or off?

With all the gale force winds we've been having I can't hear a thing, will this help?

Good audio is so tricky.
Microphones don't tend to differentiate between background noise and what you are interested in.
They just pick up all the noise!

I tried it on my cameras some time ago and it was pretty good at filtering general background traffic noise. It did nothing much for wind noise and it's the wind noise that made me turn sound off again.
