Why not just connect the DVR to a WiFi bridge and set the bridge to client mode. Much easier and probably better WiFi performance than a USB dongle. The below works perfectly well for this:

It used to work fine before, so I'm currently looking for firmware that supports the WiFi dongle feature again.
Most likely, the DVR either lost this support after a firmware update, or the settings were reset and removed the working configuration. So I'm trying to find a firmware version that re-enables WiFi support.

It's an old discontinued model so unfortunately if there's no customised version available now in the portal (I cannot find one), then it's not available.
I wouldn't downgrade firmware for the sake of buying a £20 dongle.
If that was the case, the tab in the local UI for WiFi would no longer be visible. Without a customised version from Hikvision, your only option (other than an adapter) would be to downgrade the firmware to the previous version that supports it.
So the tab in the local UI would still be there and you could re-scan and re-select your WiFi network.
I wouldn't downgrade firmware for the sake of buying a £20 dongle.
