varifocal or fixed lens?

Is there any compromise in a varifocal 2.8-12mm lens as to a fixed lens camera.
Is the image still as sharp on a VF camera, and do they stay in focus.
Will a VF do as good a job as a 12mm fixed lens camera.

Hi @Mart68

Overall there is minimal difference in performance between fixed and varifocal models.

When you zoom a motorised varifocal camera to a specific point it will likely take a couple of seconds to focus, but once focused the camera should not shift focus or adjust in any way. In most cases, if you need to go beyond 6mm then a VF camera is going to be your only option because although some models list a fixed 8 or 12mm focal length option, they are actually very rarely held in stock.
