Hi all,

I’ve recently upgraded my home CCTV system and I’m looking for advice on an NVR that could potentially resolve an issue I’m experiencing with Hik-Connect playback.

Current setup

NVR:

DS-7608NI-M2/8P

Cameras:

6 × DS-2CD2387G3-LIS2UY/SL (8MP ColorVu)

Camera settings

3 cameras:

4K resolution
25 FPS
16 Mbps bitrate
Highest quality
H.265

3 cameras:

4K resolution
25 FPS
8 Mbps bitrate
Higher quality
H.265

Intrusion detection is enabled on 2 cameras and notifications are sent via Hik-Connect.

Network / broadband

ISP: EE
Download speed: ~1.6 Gbps
Upload speed: ~120 Mbps
Ping: ~9 ms

The connection is very stable with no noticeable packet loss or significant ping spikes.

Network topology

Openreach ONT
Eero Max 7 connected directly to the ONT
D-Link multi-gig unmanaged switch
Hikvision NVR connected to the D-Link switch

The problem

When accessing Hik-Connect remotely over 5G:

Live view using the HD (main) stream is extremely choppy, laggy, and essentially unusable.

Intrusion detection event clips play but constantly freeze and stutter, making the footage unusable.

Viewing via the SD stream works fine.

However, intrusion detection events are recorded on the main stream, so those events cannot be reviewed smoothly.

When connected locally to my home network, playback is fine.

What I’m trying to achieve

I’m looking for a solution that allows smooth remote playback of the main stream while keeping my current recording settings intact. I don’t want to reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, as video quality is a priority.

At this point it feels like the NVR itself may be the bottleneck, but I’d appreciate confirmation before considering an upgrade.

Questions

Is this behaviour a known limitation of the DS-7608NI-M2/8P when used with multiple 8MP ColorVu cameras?

Would upgrading to a higher-end NVR realistically improve Hik-Connect playback under these conditions?

Or is this simply a limitation of Hik-Connect regardless of NVR hardware?

Any insight or real-world experience would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I think it's just Hik-Connect. As a test I:

  • Viewed a notification clip from yesterday with my app on mobile data - it was choppy.
  • Logged into my router and created a port forward rule to my NVR then added my NVR to Hik-Connect via it's WAN IP address
  • Still on mobile data, opened the port forwarded site (so I'm accessing my NVR via IP), went into playback and navigated to the same position as the clip - smooth playback, not choppy.
Of course that is of little use, as event clips are not available unless you are viewing your site via Hik-Connect (however I've saved you wasting money on a replacement NVR!)

I agree with JB. Its nit your NVR. I have the same NVR and 8k cams connected. When viewing through 4g its a bit choppy if the 4g signal isn't great. At the mo its around 50mbps and is jumping a bit. Ok on 5g at the moment but that is running at 250 mbps. Don't think you quoted your 5G speeds but for me it points to that connection.
